Do You Need A Signature Everything?

Did you know that we make around 35,000 decisions a day?

Most of them are so small that we don't register making them (e.g. what to eat for breakfast) and individually they feel insignificant. However, collectively they drain our energy and leave less headspace for more meaningful life choices.

Some time ago, I came across the idea of curating a signature everything to reduce decision fatigue and I was intrigued. Here are my ‘signatures’. I wonder if any resonate with you…

Signature Uniform

Steve Jobs was renowned for wearing a black top and jeans every day. Now I don’t wear the same thing every day, but I do have a part time version of this - my default going out outfit is usually a nice black top and jeans. My yoga kit is also predominantly black. Everything works with everything else (and also shows up better on screen).

Signature Fragrance(s)

I’m unable to hone it down to one, but I wear the same two perfumes on repeat. On the rare occasion I buy a scented candle, it’s always the same fragrance.

Signature Drink

When I found myself in a restuarant or bar, I always used to scan the cocktail list for something interesting, but increasingly I find myself sticking to (and thoroughly enjoying) one of two things - a glass of red or a dirty martini. No menu consultation needed.

Signature Breakfast

I eat the same breakfast every morning, no brain power required.

Signature Pen

For the analogue moments - I have one style of pen that I always reach for and I can’t now actually write with anything else. For those of you who are interested, it’s a black, extra fine rollerball.

Signature Trainer

For the last ten years or so, I’ve only worn one brand of trainer and never even consider anything else.

Signature Hosting Menu

I’m all about maximising time spent with my guests and minimising time in the kitchen, but I do want to feed people well! So I have a handful of foolproof meals I can make with my eyes closed when friends and family come over.

Signature Dog Walk

I take Biba on the same route every single time I walk her. She loves any time outside and by sticking to the same place I see the changing seasons more clearly.

But doesn’t this get boring, I hear you ask?

The goal isn't to make your whole life repetitive or without colour or variety. It's about making the basics effortless so you can spend your mental energy on the things you care about most.

By not deliberating over the small stuff, you free up space to make your life interesting and dynamic in the ways that count - deepening relationships, trying new experiences, taking creative risks.

The signature everything approach isn't about restricting your choices; it's about reserving your decision-making power for the decisions that deserve it.

Do you have a signature something? I'd love to hear what you've streamlined in your own life - whether it's a signature shampoo or the same walking route every morning.
